TTC St Clair Avenue Public Art Project

Toronto Rooftops is site-specific public artwork installed on the raised Toronto Transit streetcar platform at St. Clair at Wychwood Avenue in December 2010. The work is an examination of the zone where architecture meets the sky and how it frames our urban environment. Four triptych photo art glass panels display rooftops ranging from Modernist to Beaux-Arts style that showcase Toronto’s diverse industrial and institutional architecture. Situated above the sightline of pedestrians, the artwork suggests the perceptual illusion of viewing rooftops and sky in reality. For the streetcar passenger, the rooftops can be viewed in a state of flux, similar to a film strip, where the passage of time through architectural history is implied.
